SHARKS STARS IN CRICKET WORLD CUP!

England skipper Salma (left) with captains of the other countries

The T10 World Cup winners - England!

A NUMBER of Great White Sharks players took part in the inaugural T10 Women's World Cricket Cup competition at the Birmingham International Futsal Arena on April 21.
And Sharks captain Salma Bi lifted the trophy as skipper of the tournament-winning England side, which also featured GWS players Camilla Olsen and Anisha Bi!
The pioneering event, organised by Salma's MAD (Making A Difference) foundation, involved 32 women split into four teams of eight each representing a Test cricket playing country.
England, Australia, Pakistan and India battled it out in a thrilling tournament which also raised over £1,000 for the charity Mencap.
For Salma, it was a second major indoor sporting event she had hosted just six weeks apart.
On March 10, the 26-year-old from Bordesley Green was one of 24 women who completed a 10-hour non-stop futsal marathon at the same Birmingham venue from which over £1,000 was raised for the National Autistic Society.
After the final ball was kicked Salma immediately set about organising the T10 World Cup helped in various ways by sister Aisha, Futsal Arena staff Gemma Smith and Ikhlaq Hussain and Welsh sports journalist Dave Jones.
Pre-tournament preparations did not always go smoothly with the West Indies team pulling out the day before, plus there was family focus on the imminent addition to the Bi family, a baby nephew for Salma, but come the day all went swimmingly.
In the group stage, countries played one another on a round-robin basis with results as follows:
Game 1- England 248 Pakistan 246 (ENG WIN BY 2 RUNS)
Game 2- India 256 Australia 273 (AUS WIN BY 17 RUNS)
Game 3- India 240 England 301 (ENG WIN BY 61 RUNS)
Game 4- Pakistan 164 Australia 277 (AUS WIN BY 113 RUNS)
Game 5- England 274 Australia 268 (ENG WIN BY 6 RUNS)
Game 6- Pakistan 301 India 270 (PAK WIN BY 31 RUNS)
Game 7- Pakistan 247 England 299 (ENG WIN BY 52 RUNS)
Game 8- Australia 309 India 244 (AUS WIN BY 65 RUNS)
Game 9- England 277 India 278 (IND WIN BY 1 RUN)
Game 10- Australia 284 Pakistan 247 (AUS WIN BY 37 RUNS)
The final group standings saw England and Australia finish on four points with Pakistan and India one apiece.
Pakistan skipper Zem Afzal won the toss for the third-fourth place play-off and opted for a bowl out.
This was won 3-0 by Pakistan, with Joanne Insley, Farzana Hussain and captain Zem all hitting the stumps.
The final saw England win the toss for the first time all day and opt to bat.
They scored at a steady 20 runs per over before Mina Zahoor and captain Amna Rafiq grabbed six wickets in four overs for the Aussies.
England then fought back, Nicky Preston and Anisha Bi guiding the "hosts" to a final score of 281.
In reply, Australia batted sensibly and looked to be heading for victory on 273 in the seventh over.
However, cometh the hour cometh the hero and "Queen ov Speen" Salma took three wickets in an over before handing the ball to Nicky, who claimed another victim, leaving Australia on 251 at the close and England victorious by 30 runs.
After the tournament Salma said: "Who could have written a better script?
"Thirty-two girls from all walks of life participated in an event never attempted before. Out of all 32 girls only 10 play at club level or higher.
"As well as pulling off an event such as this, the girls also raised over £1,000 for Mencap.
"Women's sport deserves recognition, it deserves promotion, it deserves it's time to set new records, to provide for individuals who are yet to grasp the game, who are yet to be recognised for their talents - who are yet to Make A Difference."
Salma hopes to bring more events such as this not just to the Midlands, but further afield.
In the meantime, a big month is coming up for the first Asian female to play cricket for Worcestershire.
On May 2, Salma is one of three contenders in the Outstanding Contribution section at the Muslim Women's Sports Foundation Ambassador Awards at Wembley Stadium.
Then on May 18, she will be among the nominations in the Sport category at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards, also in London.
Three years ago Salma won the Outstanding Achievement accolade at the British-Asian Sports Awards.

SHARKS HEROIC IN DEFEAT

GIN'LL FIX IT 7
GREAT WHITE SHARKS 5
ALTHOUGH they were defeated the Sharks can feel totally proud of their performance in this game.
Gin'll Fix It are a very good side, having entered the league late but made a big impression, and they knew they had been in a game after facing the Sharks.
Bear in mind Gin had already beaten mighty Reedswood 7-3 earlier in the evening, therefore Sharks pushed their strong opponents even closer.
Camilla scored three and Nazma two for GWS who during the match reached 100 goals in all games for the season - fantastic!
Here are captain Salma Bi's comments on the game: "We lost 5-7 but gave them a very good game.
"Gin'll Fix It are a very good side known for their good passing and keeping possession. Proud once more of my girls - onward and upward."
And league co-ordinator Gemma Smith had this to say about the Sharks.
"They played awesome - they have improved so much."
And Gemma knows her stuff, her elegant play making her the Glenn Hoddle of the league, so respect her words!
Good news - no silly rap this week. I had prepared a celebration song about Gin'll Fix It but it will keep for another day :-)

AN ODE TO THE GREAT WHITE SHARKS

LYRICS BY DAVY "THE CRUCIAL" DOLPHIN

SUNG TO THE RHYTHM OF THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR

I'll tell you a story, a story that's not old
About the Great White Sharks beating Fresh of the Fold
They had previously not beaten this mighty team
But on this night the Sharks played like a dream
Farzana the defender she scored three
And there was a great pass from Aisha Bi
Aisha Ahmed hit two in her first game
And Camilla hit one to put Fold to shame
Yaroo! Yaroo! May I be so bold
To celebrate the Sharks beating Fresh of the Fold

Oof-oof-oof-oof.....oof-oof-oof-oof.....

There's Salma in goal, she's the Queen ov Speen
She's the best shot-stopper there's ever been
And if you iz all thinking futsal is her main game
Then you ain't seen her cricket - that's her fame
She gotta sister called Anisha - she's leadin' the race
And her nickname is the Ace of Pace
She plays for her county - Salma does too
They're the Sisters no Mercy - nothin they can't do
Yaroo! Yaroo! May I be so bold
To celebrate the Sharks beating Fresh of the Fold

Oof-oof-oof-oof.....oof-oof-oof-oof.....

Well this team called the Sharks they're simply the best
Fresh were beaten - and Reedswood are next
If you wanna get physical, the Sharks can mix it
And next they'll be defeatin' Gin'll Fix It
They are second in the Birmingham League table
And as for hittin top spot - they sure are able
They get better and better, when they lose they learn
And the respect of everyone they will earn
Yaroo! Yaroo! May I be so bold
To celebrate the Sharks beating Fresh of the Fold

Oof-oof-oof-oof.....oof-oof-oof-oof.....

SHARKS BITE MAKES THE FRESH FOLD

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 6 (Farzana 3, Aisha Ahmed 2, Camilla)
FRESH OF THE FOLD 3
WHAT a result!
Sharks had previously lost twice to Fresh of the Fold this season and must have been the underdogs again tonight, but our girls produced a magnificent performance to leave their opponents stunned.
This victory, which was the third in a row for the Sharks in the league, lifted them up to second in the table.
Fresh started strongly, taking a 2-0 lead, but then Sharks came roaring back, hard hitter Farzana smashing in back-to-back goals from defence to make it 2-2.
This really livened up the game and Fresh rallied to add one more before half time.
In the second half Farzana did more damage, getting her hat-trick with the help of a great pass from "Ice-Ice" Aisha Bi.
New player Aisha Ahmed then made it a debut to remember by scoring twice and Camilla rounded things off with a special goal.
And let's not forget captain Salma who must have been pretty good in goal to concede just three.
This really was something special from GWS. It must be so hard to beat a team which always seems to beat you, but the Sharks have learned from their defeats and come back stronger.
Tonight's win means so much and the confidence in the Sharks camp now is sky high!
Salma said after the game: "The Great White Sharks just keep on proving to be the greatest!
"All our players played exceptionally well tonight.
"There are now nine sharks on the ocean!"

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 11 (Nazma 7, Camilla 3, Faeeza)
BEES 5
IT was a fantastic night for the Sharks as they rattled up their biggest win of the season in the Birmingham Women's Wednesday Futsal League.
Nazma scored a fantastic seven goals, Camilla netted three and Faeeza was also on target for the GWS stars.
Farzana and Nahilla were also solid in defence with Salma producing a sound display in goal.
Captain Salma said: "Today we were JAWS.
"Best game by far. I am proud of you all and would never, ever replace you for other league players.
"Well done Sharks - lessons are never learnt without pain, we've got through the tough phase."
Tonight also saw new team Gin'll Fix It thrash Fresh of the Fold 7-1 (o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ooh!).
Salma added: "We have second place to play for! I had all my team available today and we played at a great tempo.

SALMA AND ANISHA ON TV

Anisha Bi

THE Fame Game was in evidence once more for the Great White Sharks, Fiveways and Wall cricket clubs and Birmingham sport today when Salma Bi and her sister Anisha Bi appeared on Sky TV.
The two sporting females were guests on Noor TV (Sky 819) where they were interviewed in depth on their sports careers by excellent presenter Ahmed Boston.
This was the latest in a series of TV, radio, internet and newspaper appearances for Salma, who in recent times has been interviewed by Sky Sports and a number of radio stations about her involvement with the Women's Futsal Marathon and T10 World Cup ladies cricket tournament at the Birmingham International Futsal Arena.
Salma is now very much a media personality and is in line for more big publicity as she has been nominated in the Sports category at the Asian Women Achievement Awards to be held in London in May.
Personal fame is not the important thing to Salma - it is the opportunity to promote sport and encourage more women's involvement in sport on an increasingly wider scale.
Salma Bi
We are lucky to have her pushing the message and carrying out the mission.

SALMA IN RUNNING FOR PRESTIGIOUS AWARD!

Our very own Salma Bi is in the running for the Asian Women of Achievement in Sport award after being named in a group of sporting achievers nominated for the prestigious prize.
GWS captain Salma is best known for her cricketing activities, as a player, coach and ambassador.
She will find out if she has won the award at a glittering ceremony in London on May 16.
Whether she is successful or not, just to be nominated is a fantastic honour.
Our friend, our hero, our inspiration - let's all get behind Salma!

SHARKS GIVE REEDSWOOD A SCARE

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 6 (Becky 4, Camilla 2)
REEDSWOOD 9
WHAT a fantastic effort from the Sharks tonight!
Playing a team which beat them 7-0 only a few weeks ago, GWS produced a brilliant performance in the return game, leading 6-5 at one stage only to be beaten in the closing stages.
Captain Salma had goal-getter Nazma unavailable so in came Becky Grundy who normally plays for Anonymous, but on this occasion helped out the Sharks.
Becky proved to be a great acquisition as she scored four goals with birthday girl Camilla Olsen putting away the other two.
Salma said: "It was a tough game, at one point we were 6-5 up but Reedswood struck late with three goals.
"However, it was a good achievement to trouble Reedswood as the last time we met they damaged us 7-0 so this result and performance shows how we are improving."
This was a really encouraging result for the Sharks - something to build on..
