SHARKS END WITH DEFEAT

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 3 (Camilla 2, Farzana)
BIRMINGHAM LADIES FUTSAL CLUB B 7
December 19, 2012

GREAT White Sharks ended their season on a losing note, but put up a battling performance.
The night resembled a Sharks reunion with the squad made up of Salma, Camilla, Farzana, Dee, Aisha, Zem, Zakia, Tabassum, Amina and Hameeda.
It was a final Sharks appearance for best defender Farzana, but the game also gave manager Salma a chance to see who will fit in next season.
This was a tough game against Birmingham and a few errors from GWS led to a 7-3 defeat, but the match was worth fighting for and that's what the Sharks did.
Scorers were Camilla (2) and Farzana.
There then followed an end-of-season tournament in which Sharks won two matches out of seven.
They beat The Late Arrivals 2-0 (Dee 2) and Bees 2-0 (Aisha, Zakia).
After another two close games, the Sharks were in position to beat Premier League teams Dream Team and Kingshurst.
Zakia, Aisha and Dee scored another one each in these games.
The final game was just the perfect the perfect way to end the night - Sharks v Kingshurst.
At 1-0 down, Aisha and Dee burst through and Aisha scored to level the game.
Many other GWS attempts came close, keeping their opponents on edge, however playing a higher team Sharks held up 1-3 in the seven minutes per game in the tournament.
Dee finished up Sharks top scorer for the season with 21 goals in all matches.

ANOTHER WALKOVER - GOOD FRIENDLY WIN

SHARKS yet again were left without a league game last night when opponents Two Left Feet conceded for the third time this season.
It is highly disappointing that GWS turn up week after week to play their matches and are always prepared to give their all, win or lose, yet they so often are left without a fixture as others who entered the league do not have the same commitment.
For the record, Sharks are awarded an 8-0 win, making it seven victories and seven losses.
However, GWS did play a friendly against The Late Arrivals and were comfortable 9-2 winners.
Dee scored five to boost her total for the season in all matches to 21. Aisha provided many of the assists.
Camilla also scored a hat-trick and Farzana added one.
This was a game much needed after the frustrating season so far.
Next Wednesday brings the Sharks final game of the season against Birmingham Futsal B

RECORD DEFEAT

GREAT White Sharks lost their latest match in the Joma International Ladies Futsal League Championship 15-0 to leaders Under Estimated last night.
It was a record defeat for Sharks against very strong opponents, however GWS will be disappointed they did not perform better against a UE team they only lost 4-3 to in their last meeting.
As the goals went in the heads tended to go down and a better performance will be expected next week.
In a friendly match against Bees, the Sharks lost just 5-3, Aisha, Camilla and Dee scoring the goals.

DEPLETED SHARKS PUT UP FINE EFFORT

Aisha scored two more goals on Wednesday

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 4 (Aisha 2, Farzana, Rahima)
THE BEES 9
Joma International Ladies Futsal League Championship - Nov 21, 2012

WITH three key players missing in Camilla, Hameeda and Sericha, the Sharks still put up a good show in defeat against the Bees.
The first half saw Sharks take the lead with the in-form "Ice-Ice" Aisha scoring two, but the Bees left no room to settle and netted two of their own.
So it was 2-2 at half time and all to play for.
A second half is always a fresh start but also a time where players can tire.
The Bees kept a high tempo and added a couple more as their opponents flagged a little.
High flying saves from Salma were not enough to keep the buzzing Bees at bay as they scored five more before the end.
Farzana scored a very good goal from distance for GWS and new youngster Rahima also got on the scoresheet following a great pass by top scorer Dee.
"Missing Camilla, Hameeda and Sericha did make this difficult for the Sharks, but to manage to get out a team and then to put up a great effort is just what is always expected from us - and we delivered," said Salma after the game.

SHARKS WELL BEATEN

Aisha scored three goals tonight

GREAT White Sharks lost 7-1 to Birmingham United in the Joma International Ladies Futsal League Championship on Wednesday night.
Although GWS showed good agility and control in the first half, Birmingham led 3-0 at the interval.
Sharks attempted to step up their game in the second half but despite having many efforts at goal only one from Aisha found the net.
In a friendly, Sharks narrowly beat Late Arrivals 7-6.
Pace and passion were in abundance as GWS made several goalkeeping changes during the game.
Scorers were: Aisha (2), Camilla (2), Dee, Farzana and Salma.

ANOTHER WALKOVER WIN

GREAT White Sharks won on a walkover for the second time this season in the Joma International Ladies Futsal League Championship on Wednesday night.
Opponents Two Left Feet failed to show, so therefore GWS won 8-0 without kicking a ball.
Frustrating in many ways, but the Sharks kept themselves busy with a friendly against old rivals Reedswood from the Premiership.
Sharks made a great start - fine passes and solid defence and a 2-0 lead with Sericha scoring both.
By half time Reedswood were 4-2 up but Sharks knew they could get better.
"Our first half performance reminded us how strong we can be when playing alongside stronger rivals," said Salma after the game.
However, in the second half, Reedswood were much stronger and ran out 12-4 winners, but top scorer Dilara (Dee) showed again how good she can be by netting twice.
"It was not just a game - it was experience," added Salma. "The girls enjoyed it so bring on our next league game next Wednesday!"

HEROIC DEFEAT FOR SHARKS

Sharks top scorer Dilara (Dee)

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 3 (Hameeda, Sericha, Dee)
UNDER-ESTIMATED 4
TRICK or Treat? Well for a while it was Trick, but after going 4-0 down the Sharks served up a Treat for their fans as they went so close to taking a point off the league leaders.
Having lost 6-1 to Under-Estimated earlier in the season, last night the Sharks had a whole new bite against the team formerly known as Fresh Off The Fold.
A strong start with positive passes saw the Sharks off to a good opening, but U-E then found their stride and took a 3-0 lead into half time.
It was now time for Sharks to wake up and give their all, but it got a little worse before it got better as U-E scored another simple goal.
With six minutes left, Sharks finally showed their sharp teeth.
Hameeda opened their account, then Sericha struck following some fine passing to make it 4-2.
Top scorer Dilara (Dee) then got in on the act with her 12th goal of the season and ninth in the league to make it 4-3 and U-E were trembling!
A final push from GWS, but their shots were suddenly off target. Camilla went closest to an equaliser, but the final whistle blew on a narrow, heroic defeat.
Sometimes you play better in defeat than you do in victory. That's Futsal and that is how it was for the Great White Sharks in their great white shirts.
Tonight the Sharks found out more about themselves - and those things were positive.
However, Birmingham Team United and Late Arrivals both forfeited their games and are pointless.
This means if the Sharks can beat the Bees again second place is not too far off.
Onward and upward!

DEE HITS FOUR IN NINE-GOAL THRASHING

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 9 (Dee 4, Camilla 2, Aisha 2, Hameeda)
THE LATE ARRIVALS 1
Oct 24, 2012
SHARKS recorded a huge win to boost their goal difference and improve their league position.
Dilara (Dee)  was unstoppable in the first half as she scored all four goals to establish herself as top goal-getter in the team with 8 in the league and 11 in all.
In the second half GWS upped their game with quick passing and good control.
Camilla made her mark once again by placing in two great goals, Hameeda swiftly got one in with the help of a goalkeeping misjudgement, and Aisha, the striker of the night, added two wonderful goals, both involving great passing from the corners.
Salma said: "A win we can stand tall with, but if we really want more than second place it is time to really step up and perform. Do what you are afraid to do."

THREE-GOAL SERICHA STARS FOR SHARKS

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 6 (Sericha 3, Hameeda, Camilla 2)
BEES 5
NEW player Sericha scored a sensational hat-trick as the Sharks won one of the most thrilling games in their history tonight.
It was a tremendous 6-5 win over the Bees, who GWS had lost to 4-1 in the opening game of the season.
The first half saw the Bees take a 2-0 lead, but then Sericha hit the net for the first time.
Hameeda then scored to level the match, however two more from the Bees gave them a 4-2 lead at half time.
The start of the second half saw the Sharks really show their teeth and emerge as a positive force.
Camilla headed in a beauty and then Sericha struck another to make it 4-4.
The game was now full of excitement and edge of the seat action.
There was no stopping the Sharks now, Camilla finding the target to put GWS in front for the first time.
It was now 5-4 to the Sharks with just five minutes remaining.
Sericha then brought the house down with her defensive quick tackling followed by a sharp shot that was impossible to save to complete her hat-trick!
The Bees still had some sting left and were not going to give up easily. They worked their way forward and benefited from a fortunate touch off Farzana to make it 6-5.
However, there were no more goals and Sharks ran out worthy winners!
Tonight proved any team in the league is capable of making a bid for the championship.

NIGHT OF MIXED FORTUNES

Aisha scored two in a friendly for Sharks

SHARKS 2 (Camilla 2) BHAM UTD 4
Birmingham Women's Futsal League - Oct 10, 2012
A TOUGH competitive league game saw Sharks produce a strong first half performance to be level at 2-2 at the break.
In the second half the Sharks continued to battle it out, but perhaps luck was with Bham Utd as they scored two more to win the match.
One of Bham's second half goals saw the ball just roll over the goal-line, while their last one arrived 25 seconds from the final whistle.
However, the GWS girls did extremely well with only Aisha, Farzana, Dee and Camilla playing, with no subs.
The night was not over as Sharks then played a friendly against the Late Arrivals and won 9-2.
A smooth game for all the players, with part-time Sharks Zem and Nazma joining in and allowing keeper Salma a chance to play out.
Scorers were: Nazma 3, Dee 2, Aisha 2, Salma, Farzana and Camilla (that makes 10, oh well)

SHARKS WIN WITHOUT KICKING A BALL!

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 8 TWO LEFT FEET 0 (conceded)

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 4 (Sericha, Huda, Nazma, Camilla)

BAYERN NEVERLUSEN 10

SHARKS were awarded an 8-0 league victory without kicking a ball as opponents Two Left Feet failed to show up.

The girls then took on Premiership team Bayern Neverlusen in a friendly and put up a good performance in parts.
Sericha, a regular 11-a-side club player, joined the GWS tonight, while part-time Shark Nazma made a reappearance.
After a good start to the game, Bayern went 2-0 up, then Sharks struck back with a goal from Sericha.
With an increased tempo, Sharks were able to keep up with the skills of their opponents and Huda slammed in the second.
By half time, however, it was 4-2 to Neverlusen.
In the second half, a highly skilled Bayern added two more before Nazma scored within seconds of stepping onto the pitch.
A few more top moves helped Bayern get to 9-3, then Camilla got a goal in following a good long pass.
The opposition scored last, however, to end up 10-4 winners.
Salma said: "No matter what the result, a stumble always prevents a fall."

GOOD FIRST HALF - THEN IT FALLS AWAY

Great White Sharks 1 (Dee)
Under-Estimated 6
Birmingham Women's Futsal League season 7 - Sep 26, 2012

Taking on the team formerly known as Fresh off the Fold, Sharks had a great first half and were 1-0 up at the break.
Dilara (Dee) scored for the Sharks, and defensively the team was very sound, marking efficiently, tackling strongly, and when needed goalkeeper Salma produced some fine saves.
It was all looking good, but then for the second half Under-Estimated's captain came out of goal and played outfield.
This made a huge difference as she began to control the play, scoring four and providing assists as Under-Estimated ran out 6-1 winners.
In the second half the Sharks appeared to run out of steam and did not do their marking jobs as well.
The concentration and organisation was also not as strong as the first half.
Salma said:
"Brilliant effort tonight girls. From a chance to win, we may have achieved a draw if we'd kept our momentum going.
"In the second half we evidently did lack composure and supporting each other, and this is where chances are lost.
"However, it was by far the best first half we have played.
"Let's stay positive. If we can cause trouble for a team as good as this, we are capable of dominating other teams :)
"We lost today, but at least tomorrow we have the winning to look forward to."

SHARKS HIT OPPONENTS FOR SIX!

Ice-Ice Aisha Biiiiiiiii :)

GREAT WHITE SHARKS 6 (Dee 3, Aisha 2, Hameeda)
LATE ARRIVALS 1
BIRMINGHAM WOMEN'S FUTSAL LEAGUE (WEEK TWO - SEASON SEVEN)
THE girls are back!
After losing their opening game of the season Great White Sharks bounced back with a great win tonight.
Salma and Aisha were up against their team-mates from Birch Coppice FC (who the sisters play for on a Sunday) so there was plenty of friendly rivalry on show.
Sharks found the feeling in their feet straight away and caused plenty of damage.
Dee opened the scoring after a steady start and then GWS upped the ante, great passing and game play leading to a second goal from Dee plus one from Ice-Ice Aisha Bi!
In the second half Dee completed her hat-trick and Aisha stretched to score her second.
There was also a top finish from Hameeda as Sharks finished in style.
Both seniors, Farzana and Camilla, built up great pressure on the opposition and goalkeeper Salma was in very solid form but this was the night for the youngsters to drop in their tricks.
Salma said after the game: "The purpose of winning is winning for a purpose".

SALMA BI - WHAT A YEAR SO FAR!

WHAT a fantastic year 2012 has been so far for award-winning sportsman Salma Bi - and there could still be more to come.
Over the past nine months, Salma's status in both the sporting world and Asian community has risen dramatically.
JANUARY
The year began with a two-page colour feature on Salma in The Asian Today newspaper which discussed her cricketing background and ambitious plans for 2012.
FEBRUARY
It was a good month for the Great White Sharks, the first female all-Asian futsal team to enter the Birmingham Women's League, and founded by Salma.
Their best result was an 8-1 win over Stingers B, in which Salma had a superb game in goal and Nazma Shaheen and Camilla Olsen scored four goals each.
MARCH
March was a huge month for Salma. Before International Women's Day, Sky Sports travelled to Birmingham to film Salma coaching cricket to young ladies.
She was later presented with a CD of all the footage, including interviews with her and some of the girls at the training session,
On March 10, Salma staged a non-stop Futsal Marathon at the Birmingham International Futsal Arena which lasted for a record 10 hours.
Salma captained Team Red and her friend Gemma Smith, the Arena's technical manager, led Team Blue in a highly successful event which raised over £1,000 for the National Autistic Society.
Twenty-four females took part and the Blue team won 167-100.
APRIL
Just six weeks later, Salma was back at the Arena in April hosting the Indoor T10 World Cup Cricket Tournament.
Teams representing England, Australia, Pakistan and India met on a round-robin basis and eventually the England team, captained by Salma, won a thrilling final against Australia.
Again over £1,000 was raised, this time for Mencap.
During April, Salma also appeared with her sister Anisha on Noor TV, where the pair discussed cricket and other sporting issues with presenter Ahmed Boston.
MAY
This month saw Salma gain deserved reward for her efforts in promoting sport when she was invited to two glittering award ceremonies in London.
At the Muslim Women Sports Foundation awards at Wembley Stadium, Salma was a finalist in the Services to Sport category.
Two weeks later, Salma was back in the capital at the ASIAN WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT awards at the plush Hilton Hotel.
This time Salma's success hit new heights as she was named the inaugural winner of the SPORT category, beating off the challenge of Britain's No1 women's tennis player Anne Keothavong.
Salma was a huge hit in this ceremony, her acceptance speech was the best of the night and the praise was ringing in her ears as she left the arena.
May really was a fantastic month for Salma as she also starred on the cricket field, helping Worcestershire Ladies to the top of Division Two. In a match against Cheshire, Salma claimed her best figures for the county of 4-25 off 10 overs.
JUNE
In June, Salma was featured in national magazine ALL OUT CRICKET where she answered questions about her career in a half-page spread. Great publicity!
Weatherwise, the summer was proving frustrating, with endless rain limiting Salma's cricket playing opportunities.
However, she kept busy on the Futsal court.
JULY
In July the Great White Sharks became the only team to beat league champions Two Left Feet during the season. Salma also scored three times from her goal!
AUGUST
It was back to winning awards in August, as Salma lifted the NatWest Volunteer of the Year accolade in the Building Partnerships category during a ceremony at Edgbaston.
Salma was also the subject of a two-page article in Fifteen21, a new internet magazine covering all aspects of Asian life.
The biggest triumph of August, however, came back at the Futsal Arena, where Salma and Gemma inspired a new record 20-hour non-stop Futsal marathon.
Thirty-three ladies took part, and Salma's Team Lime defeated Gemma's Team Tango 163-114.
Over £2,000 was raised for Cerebral Palsy Midlands on an unforgettable occasion which lasted from 4am to midnight!
SEPTEMBER
September has already delivered a major highlight for the Queen ov Speen!
Playing for North Wales side Hawarden Park in Cheshire Women's County League Division Three, Salma claimed career best bowling figures of 5-10 as Hawarden celebrated a famous victory in the last over at Oxton.
There are still three months of this year left to go, but whatever happens between now and the end of December, 2012 has been a truly remarkable year in the life of the inspirational Salma Bi.
And while her personal achievements can only be praised, Salma is always first to acknowledge her successes would not be possible without the help of others.
Teamwork is a key word for this very special person, who will continue to set new goals.

SHARKS BEGIN SEASON SEVEN!

GREAT White Sharks kicked off their latest season in the Birmingham Women's Futsal League last night with some mixed fortunes.
Having lost last season's 21-goal top scorer Nazma Shaheen to another team, this opens the door for the squad's youngsters to make the step up.
Sharks' first league game was against The Bees and they lost 4-1.
A good tempo throughout the first half saw the Sharks trailing just 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, Hameeda scored for GWS, but the Bees benefited from an own goal, then carried on stinging to add two more.
The second game was a friendly against Birmingham Futsal B and this time Sharks won 5-2.
This was a more relaxed encounter, with Camilla (2), Dee and guest Janelle (2) sharing the goals.
Goalkeeper Salma said: "The girls showed a strong attitude. This season is ours! It only gets better from here.
"The beginning is the most important part of the work."

MARATHON HEROES - SALMA'S TRIBUTE

TEAM LIME
TEAM TANGO

SALMA (left) and GEMMA

IT is almost two weeks since we rocked the world with our 20-hour futsal marathon.
Even now, what happened that day is still sinking in...
What we achieved on Saturday, August 25, was so special...
It will never be forgotten by any of the 33 players, or the many others who helped make the event such a success.
Here are my post-marathon thoughts....

First of all, the humble and so meaningful words of Team Lime's Zoya Saleh just have to be shared.
Zoya wrote:
"Hey Salma! Have to say for you and Gemma to have pulled off such a brilliant event which was successful in more than one way, there is no doubt that your both amazing individuals.
Would just like to thank you both for such a great time I had! Hope you are very proud of what you both have achieved in terms of the atmosphere and generally the whole event - it is truly a lifetime achievement! So thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to be part of it."

What a lovely, uplifting tribute from Zoya.
Next, I think it is important we list the teams which gave their all for 20 hours non-stop in the Birmingham Futsal Arena.

HEADING the event were Birmingham's two biggest sporting heroes - GEMMA SMITH and SALMA BI.
Gemma, Birmingham Futsal Arena technical manager and former under-17 England goalkeeper, founder of www.sportingpathways.org, joined in partnership with Salma Bi, multi award-winning cricketer, the first Asian woman to play for Worcestershire, qualified cricket coach and umpire and founder of http://mad-cricket.blogspot.com/  Sporting Pathways & Believe In Making A Difference - a
community interest company which hosts events to get girls involved in sports, raises money for disability charities and educates participants & the community on disability conditions.

Together they hosted their 3rd event of the year ‘Women’s Futsal Marathon 20 Hours Record 2012’ raising money for Cerebral Palsy Midlands www.cpmids.org.uk
Theme: TEAM JESS 'Salma' vs. TEAM JULES 'Gemma' representing colours Team LIME vs. Team TANGO went head to head on the REVENGE TOUR.

Special thanks to Cherie Dabbs and Keshia Denny who volunteered in promoting and assisting with registering the girls for the event.

All the following links are connected with the 20-hour marathon...

BRAWL4ALL
A tradition now set by both sporting heroes is a 10-day Countdown BRAWL4ALL where both captains battle it out over Facebook with fight talk before they meet, aiming to create more hype for the event and to get others involved.
Examples-
SALMA: An effort so poor, put away your claw, still looking a little raw. Your ahead of the game, how could you be so sure? Team LIME has the move that’s got dropping your Jaw.
GEMMA: Your rhymes are making me smile, thinking your team will struggle to walk a mile, you sure you got enough players on your file. To be honest the colour you wear is quite vile, victory will be mine in a short while.
SALMA: My Team is full of overseas, biting on you like fleas. You best prepare some good teas, I heard not all your players have working knees. Start the car now, you got your keys?
GEMMA: It’s that the best you can do, have you forgotten the success of Team blue. Be careful your team don’t fall ill and catch a Flue, Team LIME haven’t got a Clue, we have the best team oh yeah you already knew, this time I think you’ve bitten off more than you can chew.

THE EVENT
Saturday 25th August witnessed 33 young talented females, kick-off 4am playing the 20 hours up until midnight!
The day began with an opening ceremony of both captains leading out the teams.
Salma then awarded the 10-hour Record Trophy to Gemma for winning 167-100 five months ago at the First Ever Women’s 10 Hour Futsal Marathon.
As 4am hit the clock was ticking away to a New World Record, never set before anywhere in the world. www.futsaluk.net/
After months of planning and promoting, both organisers knew they needed to bring a good volume of girls through nationally.
After hosting two big events this year already - 10 hour Futsal Marathon and Indoor Cricket World Cup - the girls only could go that one better!
However things can occur which are outside anyone’s control, A few drop outs on the day resulted in Team TANGO being short of a few players to what was originally set for, but this didn’t stop any player doing what they came to achieve.
The aim was to sign up 40 PLAYERS, but we were determined 33 would do the job!
During the course of the dauy, various drinks were available for all players & spectators.
The atmosphere was overwhelming, very female friendly & family orientated; contributions were handed in by the community.
As the day progressed the level of play became more competitive, it was still anyone’s game when 10 hours passed.
TANGO were dominating until the 14th hour, then LIME stepped it up and got ahead by six goals. Every 20th Goal was prized and was presented by opposite captains.
LIME'S Star Player Emma Dagley stood out by Far.
TANGO'S specialist goalkeeper Gemma Goode stood between the posts for a record-breaking 13 hours!

MUNCH
Once snacks were put to good use, hot food was provided for lunch followed by pizza in the evening catered by Al-faisals www.alfaisal.co.uk .
As for desserts we had the sweet centre provided by Magic Balloons Services serving Chocolate Fountain, Candy Floss & Popcorn.

SOUVENIRS
Memoirs MUA and Photography- Nazish Choudhry and Martinka Cunderlikova -captured some great action shots from players, spectators to balloons.
Action clips and picture gallery copies are available for all players.

SUPPORTERS
The audience filled in close to four hours away of completing a new record. Special referee Cherie Dabbs injured and on crutches volunteered to affiliate.
Special thanks to Saty Bharaj & family who provided excellent catering & display services.

DETERMINED
Even when things got tough the girls carried on pushing- Down & Out Vicky Roe 'Roadrunner' & Stacey Coleman was amazing for Team TANGO.
Young Star Aisha Bi & Shark Buddy Nazma Shaheen was superb.
